Tackling child poverty and child labour in Malawi.

COIDA is a vibrant local NGO tackling child poverty in Malawi.  Their projects in Mzimba concentrate on sexual health (HIV/AIDS), women’s rights and child labour.  All of these are interlinked and considered crosscutting issues for Future Vision's objectives with MANERELA+

The weaker position of women in the country is often evident and is compounded by the practice of polygamy within the Ngoni tribe present in Mzimba.  Approximately 60% of women contract HIV from their lawful partners, and COIDA estimates that 6 in 10 suffer from gender-based violence.  Child labour is often also a legacy of HIV/AIDS within families as there is extra pressure on a child to work if they have sick parents or are orphaned.

Future Vision supports COIDA and carries out outreach work in Jenda, which is approximately 65KM from Mzimba boma.  Here, COIDA runs a successful programme which supports children and young people return to school and find coping strategies for family challenges.  The organisation also runs a training programme to assist older teenagers who cannot return to school but benefit from developing their professional skills in tailoring, farming or carpentry.
